SEC Chair Gary Gensler maintains his strict crypto stance, rejecting industry criticisms as Trump seeks regulatory leadership changes.
Gary Gensler, the chair of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission has restated. His position on cryptocurrency policy and enforcement, despite the fact that he is only weeks away from being ousted by President-elect Donald Trump.

During his Nov. 14 speech at the Practicing Law Institute’s 56th Annual Institute on Securities Regulation, Gensler emphasized. The importance of registering and disclosing digital assets to the public for approximately 10,000 tokens classified as securities.
The SEC approved spot Bitcoin BTC$89,151 exchange-traded funds and BTC futures investment vehicles during his tenure. But certain crypto businesses did not follow “common-sense rules of the road.”
This is a field in which over the years there has been significant investor harm,” Gensler claimed. “Aside from speculative investing and potential usage for illegal activities, the great majority of crypto assets have yet to demonstrate viable use cases. Everything we’ve done has been aimed at assuring compliance with our laws.
Although the SEC chair’s tenure expires in June 2026, Trump pledged to dismiss Gensler “on day one” if elected, indicating a potential shift in the commission’s approach to crypto enforcement. Experts have stated that the president-elect cannot dismiss Gensler without cause, and the SEC head has not indicated that he will quit.
Uncertain regulatory future for digital assets
Since Trump’s reelection on Nov. 5, crypto users have urged him to honor his promises to the sector. These included having all BTC “made in the USA,” commuting Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht’s sentence, and halting the creation of a central bank digital currency.
It is uncertain if Trump has the ability to dismiss Gensler from the SEC. The Republican recommended bypassing the Senate by making recess appointments for his cabinet and staff. At the time of publication, Trump had not announced a possible replacement for Gensler.
